“Julian is a Mermaid” is a poignant picture book where the story is told just as much through its gorgeous and whimsical illustrations as it is through its simplistic text. And the text is very simple, but powerful.
This book is about a little boy named Julian and his grandmother. On the train they see these beautiful mermaids with their long flowy hair, bright colors and swishy tails and Julian decides right there that he wants to be a mermaid as well. He goes home and makes an elaborate homemade mermaid costume that he’s very proud of. When his grandmother sees him in his costume, though evidently surprised, she shows nothing less than unconditional love. Her reaction both surprises and delights Julian.
I really enjoyed this book. Most pages are without words, yet are so expressive that it doesn’t take anything away from the story. The illustrations show people of various skin tones, hair types and body shapes that look natural and real. It expresses to the reader the uniqueness and beauty in everyone.
Overall, this story is about freedom, individual expression and acceptance, a story that everyone can learn from and enjoy.
