Book Review: "Mary Had a Little Glam", by Tammi Sauer

Updated: Jun 10

When I first saw this book's cover, I knew that I had to read it. First of all, the title alone is catchy! When I opened it, I was immediately taken away by the bright and vibrant colors of the illustrations. If you are not familiar with the remarkable and talented illustrator, Vanessa Brantley-Newton, then you will become an instant fan once you see this book's artwork.

As for the text, author, Tammi Sauer, brilliantly tells a tale of a little girl, named Mary whose sense of style is way beyond her years and that of the people in her town. The catchy, funny and colorfully poetic text is set to the same rhyming scheme as the old nursery rhyme, "Mary Had a Little Lamb." In fact the illustrations have a nursery rhyme feel with characters such as Little Boy Blue, Little Bo Peep and Mary with her "little lamb" handbag.

Mary is so incredibly stylish that she has to add an extra flair to everything, proclaiming that "I must accessorize." However, when she goes to school and finds that the teachers and students are all "glamless", she makes it her personal mission to offer her fashion tips and add "More pink! More bead! More shine!" Soon she has the entire school, including teachers glammed from head to toe. However, when it comes to playtime, Mary and all her friends learn that glam doesn't necessarily have a place on the playground,

and "sometimes less is more."

This book was such a great read. The diversity of the characters and feel good story makes it a must read for all children, especially the little diva(s) in your life.
