Diversity in children's literature is about more than just racial and ethnic representation. It encompasses the full spectrum of human experiences and identities. From cultural diversity to diversity in abilities, socio-economic status, religion, gender and more, children need to be exposed to the vast variety of human experiences. Why? Because children's literature serves as a mirror to see themselves and a window into the lives of others. We believe that when children are exposed to diverse books, they grow up to be more empathetic, accepting, and understanding of the world's many forms of diversity.

Founder, Deborah C. Mortimer
Deborah is a dynamic and creative publishing strategist in the world of children's literature, committed to fostering diversity and representation. As an attorney and former homeschool parent she has taken her passion for writing and experience to places she once only dreamed of. Her journey as a children's book author was inspired by her desire to create characters and stories that would resonate with her son and her young nieces and nephews.
Noticing a significant lack of diversity in children's literature, Deborah established Leap Forward Publishing, LLC. Her vision for the company is to bring to life stories featuring relatable, inspiring, and diverse characters. She aims to help other authors overcome their creative hurdles and tell the stories they have within them.
Beyond her publishing endeavors, Deborah uses her legal expertise to specialize in brand development and protection for authors. She has shared her knowledge on this subject on numerous podcasts and as a guest speaker, emphasizing the importance of diversity and representation in children’s literature, as well as building community partnerships to take Leap Forward Publishing's mission even further.
